Beauty Is In The Eye of the Lover

During my twenty year struggle with life-threatening diseases
I used to poke around town with my hair pulled back,
Skin blotchy, and fifteen pounds overweight

I sat next to you there
Many times
And you never noticed me
Until one day about four months after I lost my second breast
I walked into the room and you followed me around
You looked straight in the eye for the sole reason-
I was dressed differently- I had on turquoise sweat pants
And a levi jacket, large and faded, with pins attached to it-
Great Grand's dark blue stones embedded in crusader's cross
An Indian pin made of laced silver and turquoise
And others worth mentioning-Anyway-
I had big hair that day and maybe some lipstick on
You finally wanted me because
I didn't look old and fat and ugly anymore
I'll read poetry to you but I'm not going to sleep with you
You should have pulled my ponytail when I was sick
