| During my twenty year struggle with life-threatening diseases | |||
| I used to poke around town with my hair pulled back, | |||
| Skin blotchy, and fifteen pounds overweight | |||
| I sat next to you there | |||
| Many times | |||
| And you never noticed me | |||
| Until one day about four months after I lost my second breast | |||
| I walked into the room and you followed me around | |||
| You looked straight in the eye for the sole reason- | |||
| I was dressed differently- I had on turquoise sweat pants | |||
| And a levi jacket, large and faded, with pins attached to it- | |||
| Great Grand's dark blue stones embedded in crusader's cross | |||
| An Indian pin made of laced silver and turquoise | |||
| And others worth mentioning-Anyway- | |||
| I had big hair that day and maybe some lipstick on | |||
| You finally wanted me because | |||
| I didn't look old and fat and ugly anymore | |||
| I'll read poetry to you but I'm not going to sleep with you | |||
| You should have pulled my ponytail when I was sick | |||
